Pair to climb 20,000ft to help out Kris Boyd Charity

- Lochlin Highet

A pair of good mates are getting set to climb the highest pleak in Africa.

Cameron Thorne and Grier Collins will scale Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free- standing mountain, in January, raising funds for the Kris Boyd Charity in the process.

The charity was set up after the Kilmarnock striker’s younger brother Scott took his own life in 2016.

The aim of this charity is to educate people and get them to engage with others when they are in need of help instead of dismissing them or brushing of their feelings as being “weak”.

Grier, 34, of Tarbolton is Boyd’s brother- in- law and will climb the almost 20,000ft peak in January with his work pal Cameron Thorne.

The pair work at Buckley’s on Prestwick Main Street.

Grier is a chef, and Cameron a front of house manager.

And 27- year- old Cameron, of Ayr, has mixed feelings about the climb. He said: “We are looking forward to it, but in a way I am quite anxious!

“I have heard stories about people getting sick with the altitude, but hopefully we should be fine.

“We have never done anything like this for charity, but we did Tough Mudder once which we liked as we had a goal to raise money.

“Doing something like this is a big opportunity in life, so we thought we should do it.”

Cameron added: “We spoke about climbing Kilimanjaro to tick it off the bucket list.

“Just before we booked up, Kris Boyd set up his mental health charity.

“We were going to climb it anyway, but it was a nobrainer to raise awareness and money for the charity.

“It’s close to home for us with Grier being married to Kris’s sister.

“For it being a relatively new charity, they have done so well.

“I know Kris has done a lot and has raised plenty of money and most importantly awareness in the media.”

The pair will be hosting a fundraising fancy dress party on Saturday, October 27 at Pro Soccer in Ayr at 7pm. Tickets £ 10 ( tel: 07807 759084).
