cannabis oil, blow torches and a large quantity of plants which if sold could have a street value of up to £ 7000.

Ayr Sheriff Court heard the electricity and gas was isolated and neighbouring properties were checked.

And that debris from the blast could well have reached the playground area of nearby Drongan Primary school.

Allison was later traced and interviewed and had visible signs of the explosion with scabbing blisters to his legs and hands.

Solicitor Derek Pettigrew said: “My understanding is a valve is placed on each canister.

“He failed to close the valve, causing gas to be released to the atmosphere and igniting.

“It’s obviously something he didn’t intend [ to happen].

“I think he got the fright of his life.

“The explosion was caused to the back of the house.

“He accepts fully his responsibility for his actions.

“It’s impossible to imagine him being charged with a wilful act of violence and destruction – he’s simply not that kind of person.

The solicitor added he didn’t think Allison was “in any way involved in supplying”.

Mr Pettigrew explained Allison and his friends smoked a lot of cannabis and used the home grown drug for personal use.

He added he thought his client’s life is “admirable”.

Mr Pettigrew said: “There’s much good to be said for Mr Allison.

“I’ve found his life admirable. “He’s had a terr i b l e upbringing.

“One parent dying and the other encouraging him at the age of eight to smoke cannabis.

“His brother is regularly in court and now down south in prison.

“Mr Allison, to his credit, got involved in a relationship which seems to have steadied him.

“He could’ve had a different path in life.”

Weighing up sentencing options, Sheriff Scott Pattison said: “Mr Pettigrew made an exceptional plea of mitigation on your behalf. But the bottom line is you were very reckless.

“You were carrying on an enterprise which caused an explosion and extensive damage – and exposed some persons living in the area to significant damage.

“And it was all to do with you being in concern of supplying a Class B drug.

“I’ve thought about stepping away from custody.

“But I can’t, given the nature of the charge.”

The sheriff sentenced the weed grower to 30 months imprisonment.

Allison pled guilty to culpably and recklessly releasing butane gas into his home, during the heating and production of controlled drugs, leading to an explosion and a fire.

He admitted causing extensive damage, injuring himself and exposing others to risk of injury and risk of damage to their properties.

Allison also pled guilty to cannabis dealing.
