Hungry thieves nicked KFC from a church missionary group’s foodbank.

Youths made off with a bag of the chicken from the fast food chain that had been handed into to Lochside Mission.

The audicious thieves clambered over a 6ft fence at the back of Ayr St Columba Church were the container is kept.

They gained acccess to an unsecure large and heavy container in Lochside Road.

Now security has been stepped up and the container is locked at all times.

The matter was raised at North Ayr Community Council.

One community councillor said that a lot of youngsters hang outside the community centre beside the church about 8pm to 9pm.

They added: “When the community centre is locked they are coming along the side and coming round the back and then climbing over the fence

at back to get into the church ground and getting into a container and taking stuff out of it.

“The fence is at the back is a 6ft.

“It was left unpadlocked one night for a delivery.

“One youngster climbed over fence and opened the gate to let they rest in.”

The teenagers who were seen with their hoods up may have been captured on a nearby CCTV camera in Lochside Road.

The commnunity councillor added: a “We struggle to open the container’s door because of it size.

“But the thieves manage to move the bars no problem.”

A spokeswoman for the Lochside Mission at Ayr St Columba Church said: “It’s a shame that food intended for our youth group and foodbank was stolen.

“As a church we don’t like to see anybody go hungry and would much rather that people facing difficulties came to speak to us directly.”

Police said they would give the area extra attention at nights following the incident.

Lochside Mission is a free service for people to drop in for tea, toast and chat.

They alkso take referrals to the foodbank.
