Basketball squads in action

- Auchinleck Academy

The basketball teams at Auckinleck Academy have had a busy month.

The schools U15 Girls and Open boys playing their second group matches, with the U15 Girls travelling to St Maurices and the Open Boys playing a home game against Stewarton Academy.

In a tough match the girls who are getting more exposure in the competition, held their own for large periods of the game.

Mrs Kelly said the girls were “fantastic” and that they “represented the school well” and had a “great attitude”.

The boys had a much more successful day beating local rivals Stewarton Academy 37- 34 and remain unbeaten in their group.

Top scorer and again man of the match Matthew Morrison was the difference maker with strong displays in both attack and defence.

With Captain Jordan Mouzer missing through illness, Vice- Captain Ben Medhurst stepped in and did a great job leading the boys in the final few seconds. Thanks to Mr Raby for standing in as coach for the day, with Mr Frew refereeing the match.

Both teams have one more match to play and both have chances of making the next round.

The S1 boys’ basketball team got their basketball careers under way in the Ayrshire League on Tuesday, October 30, with a tough away fixture to St Matthews Academy in North Ayrshire.

A close match throughout saw the home - team score two important baskets right at the end to take a 15- 12 lead.

A spokesman for the school, said: “With 11 boys away with us and everyone getting good court time, I believe this will hold us in good stead for the future and I hope this is the start of a long and illustrious career for them all in school basketball.”

Captain Andrew Strachan ( S1 - Mossgiel), added: “With only a few training sessions under our belt, it was great to finally get a game. The guys did a really good job and I look

forward to the return fixture later in the year. Thanks to St Matthews for having us.”

S1 pupils at Auchinleck Academy have been raising awareness of Remembrance Day through poetry.

Pupils in the English Department were asked to design their own poppies and write a war poem of their own choosing on them.

Pupils enjoyed the task as they knew some facts about both WW1 and WW2 but had not really thought about what it must have been like to fight in the war.

They thought that the imagery used by poets help to make the poem come alive and helped picture what it must have been like for some soldiers fighting or for those left at home.

Poppies are displayed in the corridor of the English Department and wi l l continue to be added to in the lead up to Remembrance Day.

A group of pupils from S3 English classes were treated to a talk by writer Martin Stewart at Auchinleck Community Library on Friday, October 26.

Martin told them how he became a full time author after working in teaching and explained where he got his ideas for his first novel Riverkeep.

He also spoke about the setting of his second book The Sacrifice Box and shared some writing and redrafting tips.

Thanks go to the staff at East Ayrshire Libraries for organising all the Imprint events and inviting schools to be involved.
