RING QUEEN ELLIE IS SCOTS CHAMP

-

A rising star of the boxing ring has landed her first national title.

Doon Valley’s Ellie Bunyan, 12, claimed the Scottish Novice crown at Ravenscraig.

She scored a unanimous points victory over Rosyth’s Carly McTaggart.

Ellie becomes the first Ayrshire girl in her age group to win the prestigious title in the Schoolgirls 52kg class.

Doon Valley coach, Sam Mullen, revealed: “We’re all really proud of Ellie as this is a huge achievement at such a young age.

“She has only been with us for about 18 months but has made big progress during that time.

“Ellie initially came into the gym to do some fitness work and has taken off 12 kilos during that time.

“Her boxing has developed as a result of being here and she’s working very hard.”

The competition was for girls who had fought between zero and seven fights in their career so far.

And Damellington girl Eillie, who attends Doon Academy, was the latest from her illustrious club to bag an honour.

Sam said: “Ellie joins the list of national champions to come from our club.

“We currently have 18 amateurs and four pros on the books, with members from as far afield as Stranraer and Dumfries.

“Boxing among young girls is definitely becoming more popular and Ellie is not the only one we have at the club.

“She’s already trained with Boxing Scotland and has a bright future but knows there is plenty of hard work ahead.”
