A speeding driver sparked blue lights after driving dangerously through built up areas in Ayr.

Aiden Findlay, 20, appeared at Ayr Sheriff Court, which heard how he was caught travelling at 60mph on Castlehill Road and 70mph on Dalmellington Road, both of which have a limit of 30mph and 40mph.

The young man, of Station Road in Dunure, appeared before Sheriff Mhari Mactaggart last week.

He also admitted to straddling the centre of the white line dividing the carriageway on Dalmellington Road to prevent police from overtaking.

Depute Fiscal, Jason Bell, explained: “It was around 00.15 hours when police attended at a car park and noted the vehicle to be stationary. “They asked to speak with the male, who was the accused - he started the vehicle but was asked to stop. The accused drove away, passing the police. A call was then put out.

“Blue sirens were turned on and police saw the vehicle driving at excessive speeds - 60mph in a 30mph, with no effort to slow down. As they drove at 60mph, the accused was driving in the middle of the road to prevent the officers from passing.

“The accused then slowed to 50mph and was instructed to pull over. He eventually stopped and was removed and hand cuffed.”

The court heard that Findlay had indicated that he had “panicked” resulting in him committing the crime.

Sheriff Mactaggart deferred his sentence to obtain at criminal justice social work report.
