Murchie gets set for Scottish Cup tie

-

Unlike their only other defeat in their Tennent’s Premiership campaign a couple of weeks ago when they were never ahead of Watsonians, Ayr were eight points up against Currie with less than quarter of an hour left so it has to be worrying that they couldn’t close out the game.

It was certainly not one of Ayr’s better displays agreed coach Peter Murchie.

He said: “Yes, we were ahead for large parts of the game but the margins are so fine at this level, we gave them a chance to get a couple of tries but they didn’t have to work all that hard to score them thanks to what we did.

“When our ball retention, which is something we have worked on a lot, was good, we looked as though we might do some more damage but we weren’t consistent enough in keeping the ball.

“T h a t i s v e r y disappointing, particularly when you look at the margin at the end.

“But we will bounce back from this and it is now all about what we do from here because we have some cracking games coming up in December so it is all about staying focused because we can be an awful lot better than that.”

Ayr still top the Tennent’s Premiership but now by the narrowest of one point margins from Melrose but league business is suspended next week for the Tennent’s Scottish Cup.

Ayr have a home tie against Dundee High Rugby ( kick off 12.30pm).

The Mayfield men are currently toiling at the basement of Tennent’s National 1, three off the bottom above Cartha Q/ P and Hamilton and last Saturday they lost their league match at Mayfield against Marr by 35- 0.
