Ayrodynamic finish season in style

- Lochlin Highet

As the 2018 triathlon season came to an end, Ayrodynamic Athletes finished up in style, at home and abroad.

A quartet of club members were selected to represent Great Britain in the European Multisport championships in Ibiza in a variety of Triathlon disciplines, and all performed with distinction.

Vintage veteran Grant Young, competing in the new Aquabike race, won the European championship and brought home a gold medal – the first won by an Ayrodynamic member at this level.

Just two days previously the former Kyle head teacher had also taken part in the Triathlon Cross event.

Exiting the sea in the silver medal position, the Ayr man held his place through the bike, but then saw two runners pass him near the end and relegate him to fourth.

Father and daughter duo Alastair and Mandy Stewart had gained selection for the Duathlon, held in the resort of Santa Eularia.

Mandy finished in a highly creditable sixth position for the run, cycle run event, and as third GB competitor, also gained automatic qualification for next year’s championships in Romania.

Dad Alastair also posted a top- 10 finish, but suffered from a period of restricted run training due to an injury in the lead up to the event.

Lyndsey Blair was the final member of the group, and took part in the aquathlon – a swim and run event, in San Antonio, a town more known for its clubbing.

Competitors were taken out to sea in boats, before being dropped into the water to begin the race.

She had an excellent swim, leaving the water in eighth place, but dropped several places on the run to finish 17th overall.

Back home, the results of the Triathlon Scotland ‘ legends’ series were announced, and Lorna Todd emerged as winner of the overall female sprint triathlon series.

She also won the veteran section of the competition to complete a brilliant season where she won three Scottish titles and represented GB in Glasgow as well.

Away from competition, the club held their AGM and Alastair Ness was elected as new President.

The annual presentations evening takes place on December 1, where the club triathlete of the year will be revealed.

Finally, the ever popular Turkey Trot will again be held on Boxing Day, at the Citadel Centre.

As usual, there is a 5km and a 10km race, and both can be entered on the web site ‘ Entry Central’.
