Prince Charles’ 70th birthday praise

-

Prince Charles has had lavish 70th birthday praise heaped upon him for helping rescue the Cumnock area.

It came from Bill Grant MP on the floor of the House of Commons.

And on behalf of all his constituents in the Cumnock, Auchinleck and New Cumnock area, he gave official thanks to the Prince.

Charles has been the key driver not just of economic growth at Dumfries House and its estate, but also in New Cumnock.

Bill Grant took the opportunity to detail to the House the Prince’s achievements.

He said: “It is a privilege on behalf of myself and my constituents to wish His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, or indeed the Duke of Rothesay as he is known north of the border, many happy returns on his 70th birthday.

“He is indeed a weel kent and welcome face in Scotland and has taken considerable interest in the architectural heritage of this nation, not least in preserving for the community the beautiful Dumfries House in my constituency.

“It hosts events such as the annual Boswell Book Festival, farming conferences and a recent Police Scotland seminar, Dumfries House remains a focal point for the whole community in East Ayrshire.”

Mr Grant, speaking on Wednesday, said the royal connection also stimulates tourism and is an “excellent source of employment and training locally.”

The Trust set up to run the house, estate and foundation already has 300 staff and is thought to be the biggest private sector in the area.

The MP said his Royal Highness has given hope and opportunity to young people and worked in partnership with Sir Tom Hunter and others on the restoration of the beautiful red sandstone at New Cumnock Town Hall.

“Mr Speaker, on behalf of the residents of Ayr, Carrick, Cumnock and indeed Scotland, I would very much like to wish His Royal Highness many happy returns on his three score years and ten today.

“And as a former firefighter I would ask His Royal Highness to be careful with the candles on his cake.”
