BELL SAYS TEAM- MATES MUST SMARTEN UP TO STAY TOP AFTER MORTON PUT UP THE SHUTTERS

Stand- in skipper admits it’s getting tougher

-

Stuart Wilson at Somerset Steven Bell admits Ayr’s league leaders must get smarter if they’re to stay on top.

United were frustrated at Somerset for the second week running as they drew a blank against Morton.

And stand- in skipper Bell confessed: “It’s becoming harder to break teams down.

“The opposition are trying to make it tougher for us which is understandable.

“We’re the team at the top of the league. If we were in mid- table we would probably do the same.

“Plus we’ve got Shankland, Moore and Moffat up front who are always a threat.

“So it’s understandable teams are coming up against us now with a game plan.

“It’s up to us to find a better way to break them down.”

But Ayr rarely looked like finding those answers here and were forced to play the last half hour with 10 men following Craig Moore’s red card.

Morton enjoyed the better of a dull affair and hit the post through Gary Oliver before Gregor Buchanan had a header cleared off the line in stoppage time.

Bell added: “The last two games has been four points dropped in one respect.

“But another way of looking at it is that it’s another point gained.”

Ayr boss Ian McCall labelled Moore’s sending off for a kick at Buchanan as “daft”.

But he refused to slam the striker for his moment of madness.

He said: “Craig has held his hands up – all our boys are as honest as the day is long.

“The others worked their socks off to get him out of jail.

“This could be a good point at the end of the season.”

Ton boss Jonatan Johansson said: “We created enough chances to take all three points.

“But a clean sheet down here is difficult to get so I’m pleased with the 90 minutes.”
