a man has been tagged after owning up to stealing from two cars.

paul Cairns avoided jail last week when he appeared before sheriff scott pattison at ayr sheriff Court.

the 41- year- old was caught on CCtV on august 15 at the car park to the rear of Maybole High street, smashing a car window to gain access to it, then stealing a DVD player, CDs and a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses.

On the same day, he took £ 55, a bank card and a Bluetooth speaker from another car on Cargill Road in Maybole.

Depute Fiscal, samantha allan, explained: “On charge one, the accused was captured by CCtV at around 2.45pm appearing to smash the window of a car to gain access.

“On another charge, a witness was contacted by another witness at 6am having noted his vehicle to be damaged.

“police arrived and noted that there was dry blood on the side of the door and the witnesses were missing £ 55, a bank card and a Bluetooth speaker.

“Officers carried out enquiries and saw the accused in the near by bus stop. He tried to hide a black rucksack and hide behind others standing at the bus stop.

“the officers observed that he had a fresh wound. the conducted a search and found the witnesses bank card and other items in the rucksack.”

Defence solicitor Ian gillies added that Cairns had been taking street valium and alcohol which got him into “certain circumstan­ces”.

Cairns was ordered to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work with two years of supervisio­n and eight months under a restrictio­n of liberty order.
