Fleece a jolly good fellow

Help return good Samaritan’s coat

- Abi Smillie

A thankful family are on the hunt to track down a kind hearted man who helped an elderly woman in need.

Lena Blair, who suffers from dementia, walked almost two miles in just a short sleeved t- shirt last Monday until a kind hearted man gifted her his fleece at Ayr railway station.

Daughter Lena Elliott, 50, thought her 81- year- old mum was attempting to get the train to Girvan where she used to live.

Mum- of- four Lena, of Ayr, said: “It’s just nice to know that there’s some good people out there who could help her when she was at her most vulnerable.

“We moved her from Girvan to Ayr in February.

“Every now and again she has periods of great confusion and forgets that she lives here.

“On Monday night it was about 6.20pm when her carers phoned me and said that she wasn’t in the house.

“My husband was out searching the streets.

“So I said to my husband ‘ do me a favour and check Ayr Train Station’.

“He spoke to someone at the station and they said ‘ oh yes we saw a wee woman wandering about with just short sleeves on’.

“She said ‘ we saw her going over the bridge with a man with a fleece covered in paint’ - it was obviously his work fleece.

“We reckon the man saw her freezing cold so he gave her his fleece.

“Poor guy got off the train to give her it.

Grateful Lena now wants to return the green fleece, which has a vape and pills in the pockets, to its rightful owner.

She added: “It’s heartbreaking. “But we’ve had a lot of strangers messaging us and giving us advice.

“You never know when it’s going to happen to you or someone in your family.

“She’s very independent and does everything herself.

“She had walked almost two miles from where she lives up to the train station on a bitterly cold night with just a t- shirt.

“She passed so many people - and it just took that one act of kindness.

“Someone who took that moment to realise that something wasn’t right.

“It could have turned out a hell of a lot worse.

“It’s just to highlight if you see anything out of the ordinary then report it.

“We just want to thank him for his kindness.”
