A right good game for all

-

It’s been the topic of more pub debates that I care to remember – and those debates have reached fever pitch in the last few years as Auchinleck Talbot brought home title after title and trophy after trophy.

“Aye – the Talbot would give your Ayr United a right good game . . .”

If I’ve heard it once – I’ve heard it a dozen times.

But I reckon I’m going to hear it a thousand times between now and January 19! The pairing of Ayr United and Auchinleck in the Scottish Cup fourth round has created one of the juiciest ties in Ayrshire’s football history. This is a local derby and senior v junior – but it’s not a pre- season warm- up or a sociable testimonial.

As someone in my pub rather colourfully put it – “it’ll be blood and snotters fitba”.

Well, I hope there’s no blood . . . and I hope the snotters stay in a handkerchief.

But I have to agree with the original argument - “Talbot WILL give Ayr United a right good game”.

I know the managers respect each other – and I’m sure the players will be the same. It’s now down to the supporters to help put on a football occasion that will show Ayrshire football at its best – skilful, exciting, sporting and passionate.

And before you ask – No! – I don’t have any spare tickets . . . !
