Riding the old diesel down to Stranraer

-

With trains to Maybole, Girvan, Barrhill and Stranraer finally back on track – I decided to treat myself to a jolly jaunt at the weekend! Toot! Toot!

I think I last made this journey about twenty years ago – and nothing much has changed.

But back in the day – the back gardens of the passing houses weren’t cluttered with so many recycling bins!

And south of Maybole, you now need a calculator to count the wind farm towers.

Still, it was a grand ninety minute trip. The view of Ailsa Craig from the stretch south of Girvan was fantastic and the Galloway hills have lost none of their grandeur.

Tipping some chilled Vina Sol into a wee plastic glass after Barrhill just completed the journey.

After an overnight stop at stunning Portpatrick, the Sunday return journey was full of shoppers – heading to Ayr to stock up on Christmas gifts.

There’s talk of culling the Ayr to Stranraer link - but I hope they keep it.

It’s a little local treasure that we won’t miss . . . until its gone forever.
