Cruel yobs target beloved town hub

Donated trees scattered across the town

Relentless vandals have targeted a much needed community hub THREE times.

Glendoune Community Association has fallen victim to mindless yobs who have been destroying their leafy green welcome to the centre.

Trees planted at the Piedmont Road hub have been ripped up and found strewn across the town.

And now the front garden has had 29 blossoming trees whittled down to just 12.

Glendoune Community Association chairwoman Wendy Nibloe said: “It all been a bit of a nightmare.

“We’re trying to do good.

“For the last six weeks we’ve been renovating the centre and even had the outside cleaned up.

“We were kindly donated trees from Woodland Trust and the Men’s Shed put them in for us.

“But they have been vandalised three times now.

“Kids- or adults- have went and pulled out the trees.

“They’ve battered some off the pillars and front door at the centre because they were covered in muck as well.

“We found a lot of them all over the place- down the Fire Station, at the back of the centre, up at the shop- all round.

“We have gone from 29 trees to 12.

“We have other plants like blackberry bushes to go in but we’re just not going to bother because we don’t know what will happen to them.

“The police are checking and we’re hanging about at night to see if we can see anything but it can happen when we’re not there. “We can’t be there 24 hours.” Wendy admitted a lack of CCTV was becoming problematic due to the serial vandals.

She added: “We don’t have CCTV so we might look into getting our own now.

“We’re only trying to make it look nice.”

Glendoune Community Association run various groups for children and seniors alike out of their centre.

The group offered free school meals to youngsters during the summer holidays and are now appealing for Christmas toy donations for the festive season.

Wendy said: “We’ve got the kids Christmas party coming up and we’ve got a toy appeal out to get Christmas gifts.

“And an appeal for hampers to make them up for families and older folk.”
