Stress toll at council
Personal stress is the biggest cause of council sick days.
The condition caused East Ayrshire Council staff to take 1,542 days off between July 23 to October 14 this year.
Work- related stress was the fourth top reason for absence - leaving people unable to carry out their jobs for a total of 838 days.
The figures came to light at the East Ayrshire Governance and Scrutiny Committee on Thursday. Councillor Sally Cogley, of the Rubbish Party, said: “There is a greater awareness of mental health. communities team were off work the most - taking 2,626 sick days. Most people throughout the council took between two to seven days off.
Over the course of July 23 and October 14 there was a total of 8,915 working days lost due to absence.
During that time one person was sacked due to absence. Thirty seven employees received written warnings and seven got verbal cautions because of the length of time they had been absent. Four staff received a final warning. Most people ( 94 per cent) were absent for less than a month.
