Stress toll at coun­cil

Per­sonal stress is the big­gest cause of coun­cil sick days.

The con­di­tion caused East Ayr­shire Coun­cil staff to take 1,542 days off be­tween July 23 to Oc­to­ber 14 this year.

Work- re­lated stress was the fourth top rea­son for ab­sence - leav­ing peo­ple un­able to carry out their jobs for a to­tal of 838 days.

The fig­ures came to light at the East Ayr­shire Gover­nance and Scru­tiny Com­mit­tee on Thurs­day. Coun­cil­lor Sally Cog­ley, of the Rub­bish Party, said: “There is a greater aware­ness of men­tal health. com­mu­ni­ties team were off work the most - tak­ing 2,626 sick days. Most peo­ple through­out the coun­cil took be­tween two to seven days off.

Over the course of July 23 and Oc­to­ber 14 there was a to­tal of 8,915 work­ing days lost due to ab­sence.

Dur­ing that time one per­son was sacked due to ab­sence. Thirty seven em­ploy­ees re­ceived writ­ten warn­ings and seven got ver­bal cau­tions be­cause of the length of time they had been ab­sent. Four staff re­ceived a fi­nal warn­ing. Most peo­ple ( 94 per cent) were ab­sent for less than a month.
