Finest hill view in Ayrshire

Beoch vistas stretch for 20 miles

- Stephen Houston

A ranch with possibly the best hill view in Ayrshire is up for grabs.

Beoch, sitting high on the landward side of the Carrick Hills, has quite amazing views to the Galloway Hills.

It has just gone on the market again, after being put up for sale two and a half years ago.

The place is up a long private drive in complete seclusion.

It was for many years the home of the fine old diplomat Murray MacLehose.

The former and longest serving Governor of Hong Kong loved his ranch so much, he took the title Lord MacLehose of Beoch.

In past days he had the farm and surrounding properties too.

Now it is just the vast four bedroomed bungalow for sale through Corum Ayr.

Many moons ago this writer had the privilage of spending an afternoon with the old Baron, carrying out what became the final interview for a prestigious Honkers magazine.

He had a wonderful dog with a splendid name.

The Lord suddenly shouted “Vanish” as the pooch bolted into the lounge. I thought he was telling me to be on my way!

Both his Lordship - affectionaly known as “Jock the Sock” - and Lady MacLehose loved Beoch.

You reach the electric gates via a long daffodil- lined private road off the High Maybole road from Alloway.

There are seven main apartments across 2000 square feet, many rooms enjoying twin aspects.

The big lounge has a log- burner and French doors to the key feature of the home . . . the wooden decking.

This large area laps up those views, forever changing with the weather, across the rolling hills to the bigger lumps on the Galloway border.

Outside you get four acres of grounds including an orchard, stable for three and garaging for two.

All this and you are just three miles from Alloway.

For viewing call Corum on Ayr 880888.
