Shiny new welcome for town- but is it needed?
Split opinions for sign upgrade
South Ayrshire welcome signs could say hello to an upgrade.
Leadership Panel councillors are due to vote on whether the scruffy old signage will be replaced shiny new emblems.
And with a sum of £ 100,000 set aside with estimated costs of £ 45,000, the 44 new signs are seen as a “priority”.
But what do the public think? We took to Ayr High Street to find out.
Josh Brown, 23, from Ayr said he didn’t see the upgrade as a “priority”.
The makeup artist said: “It’s just a sign. “Couldn’t they just give them a good clean? “I think if it’s going to cost that much then it’s probably a waste of money.”
Rosie Mapplebeck from Annbank said: “There’s obviously a pot of money allocated to it.
“But I think people will be upset if say, for example, funds for disabilities get cut and they’re splashing out on signs.
“I think there’s better ways to have a welcome into the town like public toilets.”
Mum Heather Clarke thought it would brighten up the town and hopefully draw more tourists.
She said: “I think it’s a good idea.
“It’d be a nice welcome into the town.” Recently retired teacher Margaret Clarke added: “I think it’d be nice.
“Those signs have been there for years. “And East Ayrshire have had theirs updated.”
