County cancer unit will face the chop

Ayrshire Post - - News - Sarah Hilley

There will only be one e main cancer unit in Ayrshire.

Chemo treatment is to be axed at either Ayr or Crosshouse Hospital, a health board meeting heard on Monday.

Heath bosses at NHS Ayrshire & Arran are considering a huge shakeup of cancer services.

Previously it was proposed Crosshouse Hospital would be home to the cancer unit but bosses insist they are now considering Ayr too.

Peter Maclean, clinical director, cancer services, said: “The next stage is to determine where the site will be.”

The NHS Ayshire & Arran health board meeting was told a new model for cancer treatment is being proposed across the whole of the West of Scotland.

Non- executive board member Ian Welsh said there is concern about moving services away from Ayr.

As well as the main cancer unit, new outreach treatment hubs could be available elsewhere but they would only cater for low- risk cases.

Nurse director Professor Hazel Borland said the outreach service could be located at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine.

She added: “For the next 12 to 18 months there will be no change. It continues as it is.”

Councillor Joe Cullinane raised the issue of consultation and said any change at Ayr would become political.

He added: “At the end of the day cancer touches most people’s lives in our community.”

Chief executive John Burns said the ambition was to deliver the “best care we can to our population”. He added: “We need to think of it as a pathway, not just a building.”

Councillor Laura BrennanWhitefield wanted more information on the outreach cancer treatment.

She said: “There has been a question mark over Ayr Hospital since 2012. For me it is such a big thing. We have to have a sight of what the final result will be.”

The chosen hospital would undergo an upgrade to host the cancer unit.

A paper presented to the board said it was proposed: “NHS Ayrshire & Arran would have one cancer unit and should seek to determine optimal provision of outreach services as appropriate.”

The proposed West of Scotland service model was endorsed by the board.
