Prestwick Airport is to remain the venue for Kyle and Carrick District Council’s annual Food Trades Exhibition. The authority’s environment committee declined the offer to stage the 1994 event at Ayr’s Craigie College. The offer was by the College Caterers Association who are holding their national conference at the college in March. Environmental health officer Denis Reid advised a move was unadvisable. The show attracts 45 food trade companies.

The new abattoir at Heathfield, estimated to cost £ 550,00, will not be municipally- run, but built and operated by bacon curers Mitchells. The arrangement will result in considerable savings to the ratepayers. As part of a modern meat- packing plant, it will maintain the traditional service to the people of the district.

R Connolly, a director of Mitchells, said: “This will be the most modern plant of its kind in Scotland. It will vastly improve marketing services for farmers.”
