OAP Anna trapped in home for a year

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

A pensioner has been a prisoner in her home for a year.

Bed- bound Anna Hayes claims she could actually live her life again if two carers instead of one went to help her.

The retired clerical worker has not been outside her maisonette flat at Prestwick Toll for 12 months.

The last time she was out of her bedroom was at Christmas.

The 73- year- old claims she has been denied a pair of morning carers and that South Ayrshire Council are up to “silly beggars”.

Tomorrow will mark a year since she last left her house in Wood Park.

Council social workers are denying her a second carer, who would be able to shift her out of her bed.

The former Auchencruive College staffer said: “A second person is all it would take to give me my life back. “They are playing silly beggars.” Anna’s main carer is her husband Vincent, 77, but he is unable to bend his left leg and can only walk on crutches.

She said: “I fell while moving from my relater to my recliner and I was on the floor for three hours as Vincent could not help.

“My son Andrew came home and together they got me up quickly.

“But Andrew works shifts and can sometimes be away from 6am to midnight so he cannot be there for me.

“I am a prisoner in my own home and all I want is a spot of freedom.

“They don’t seem to want to help and I am annoyed at the social workers.”

South Ayrshire Council dispute part of Anna’s claim and say they are unable to discuss it.

However a source suggested that if clutter was removed from the house and bedroom a two- carer service may be possible.

The source added: “It is a question of access.”

South Ayrshire Council said they only received a request for a two- carer service on January 16.

A spokesperson said: “Our home care service is designed to provide the best possible support for those who need some help to maintain their health, safety and wellbeing while remaining independent at home.

“The support provided is based on individual needs and living circumstances and when there is any request to amend the care package in place these factors are always carefully taken into account before any decision can be taken.

“We work closely with service users to ensure they understand why their care package is the appropriate one for them and how it supports their quality
