MARR RUGBY U18 ........................ 34 WEST OF SCOTLAND U18 ............. 9 DUNCAN BECKWITH REPORTS

On what was a springlike afternoon at the start of the match, Marr 18s welcomed West of Scotland to Fullarton.

A good crowd came along to watch the purple and gold of the future, though some of the players have already turned out for the 2s this season.

Marr played away from the courtyard in the first half into a really strong wind.

Despite this Marr dominated territory, the only relief coming from West when they made use of the gale and kicked the ball from one end of the pitch to the other.

Marr’s first score came from wing Evan Light when scrum half Macdougall moved the ball down the blindside from a ruck.

Light still had a bit of work to do to beat a number of defenders before providing a poor impression of Chris Ashton as he dived over for an unconverted try.

West came back and kicked a penalty after Marr were penalised for a high tackle.

Captain Kyle McCulloch then went over for Marr’s second try after the team played their way up the pitch from their own try line after a long kick by West.

This was converted by Gregor Beckwith to increase the lead to 12- 3.

West kept in touch with two successful penalties following Marr indiscretions but that was to be their last scores as Marr turned the screw, with Sean Nicol going over in the corner after good handling, and just on half time tight head Isaac Renucci went over in the other corner after a number of good phases. Half time 22- 9 to Marr.

Marr then moved to empty the bench at half time.

The home side, however, continued to dominate and with the luxury of the strong wind at their back pinned West in their own half.

Two further tries were scored, both by Ethan Reilly, with one converted, to make the final score 34- 9 to Marr.

It was great to provide game time for all 28 players, with some enhancing their chances of being selected for the squad for next weeks match against St Aloysius.

Things to work on, but considering the layoff a good performance from the entire squad.

• Marr’s 1st XV are due back in action this coming Saturday with a trip to Hamilton scheduled.
