WE’VE BIN HAD!

Brazen binmen caught on camera mixing up rubbish that had been carefully separated for recycling

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

Brazen binmen have been caught dumping loads of separated recycling into the back of the same refuse lorry.

The shocking evidence makes a mockery of the new flagship South Ayrshire Council recycling policy that has cost a fortune in public cash.

Residents have been carefully separating their waste. But a bin team were filmed as they uplifted four giant refuse containers and put them all in the same wagon.

The pair of hi- vis clad refusemen did not appear to care who was watching as all four bins were dumped into the back of their lorry in Ayr’s Newmarket Street. One source said: “The council has bombarded us with information and leaflets on our new recycling.

“What is the point?”

The shocking evidence makes a mockery of the new flagship South Ayrshire Council recycling policy, which has cost a fortune in public cash.

The bin team were filmed as they uplifted four giant refuse containers and put them all in the same wagon.

The pair of hi- vis clad refusemen did not appear to care who was watching as all the waste was dumped into the back of their lorry, driven by a third council staffer.

They were recorded on video for four minutes after they arrived at the bin corral in Ayr’s Newmarket Street.

The binmen first lifted the purplelidded container for paper, card and cardboard then a green one for general waste, a blue for metal and plastic cartons before a fourth, which looks like another purple bin. It happened at 8.50am on February 8.

Our source said: “What I saw was disgusting.

“How can these people look themselves in the eye?

“The council has bombarded us with information and leaflets on our new recycling.

“What is the point?”

The evidence emerged following our report last week on the same thing happening in Girvan.

Another resident on the outskirts of Ayr has said their bins had been mixed.

Sarah McGhee said: “This practice could be widespread as friends of my husband Andy have reported the same thing. It is so disheartening for everybody who is separating everything and I am so angry.

“I would feel happier if the council are now forced to let people into their recycling centre to see what is actually happening.”

She watched from her kitchen window at Mainholm Smallholdings in the first week of January as the blue and green bins were emptied into the same load.

The council rolled out the new system between October and last week and will continue to stage community roadshows to explain the system until next week.

They want to reduce the 20,000 tons of household waste sent to landfill every year from 46,000 homes.

It has not funded all the cost of the new bins and got a grant from Zero Waste Scotland.

South Ayrshire Council was told of our amazing footage on Friday.

They claimed they could not give a comment on Monday and asked could they give a response on Tuesday once the binmen on that shift had been grilled. They failed to make the paper’s deadline.
