The son of a piper in the Scots Guards treasures a D- Day relic from his father.

Daniel Buchanan, known as Piper Dan, was 15 and working in Climie’s Butcher Shop on Ayr High Street when he joined the army in 1927.

“My dad gave me it before he died and it’s my most treasured possession.”

Ths message, dated June 5 1944, reads: “The time has come to deal the enemy a terrific blow in Western Europe.

“On the eve of this great adventure I send my best wishes to every solider in the Allied team. With stout hearts, and with enthusiasm for the contest, let us go to victory.”
