Dementia patients in ward ‘ hell’

- RYAN CARROLL

Dementia patients are crawling about on the ground while staff eat their dinner around them.

That is the shocking claim from an Ailsa Hospital insider who says the NHS are already regretting the closure of its Dunure Ward.

The whistleblower says Woodland View hospital, where some patients have been relocated, is now full to the brim.

And they made that serious claim that some patients are now being completely neglected in Ailsa’s other wards.

They told The Post: “They are already regretting closing the Dunure Ward because Woodland View is now bursting at the seams.

“It’s like One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. There’s a massive waiting list for patients there and there is no where for them to go, it’s a joke. And they put some others in the Jura Ward and now they are all falling about the place.

“The patients are crawling about on the floor while staff sit there eating their dinner round about them. It’s terrible.

“The amount of patients that have been hurt through neglect is terrible. The patient safety is unbelievable. I wouldn’t put my dog in there never mind my elderly relative.

“The patients are crawling about like animals. Some of them fall all the time, but where are the staff? Sitting around that table.

“I couldn’t sit and eat my dinner while there is a patient crawling about at my feet. I do my job because I love it.

“But all the top bosses just sweep it under the carpet.”

The whistleblower’s strong claims come after the Dunure Ward was culled just last month.

At that time the NHS said the decision was ‘ designed to make best use of our entire estate, while continuing to improve the patient’s experience.’

But the insider claims that has been far from the outcome. And they insist that funding is not the issue.

They said: “The money is there. They spent all this money painting these wards and then they shut them. And now I’m told some patients are going to be put into a nursing home at a cost of £ 700 a week.

“So how can they not have just put all that money together to keep one of the wards open. Some of these patients have spent most of their lives there.

“They did this years ago, putting dementia patients into a nursing home, and some of them died – the same is going to happen again.”
