Ayrshire Post

Now is the time for vital spark

-

Naturally we welcome any attempt to get Ayr back on its feet.

Time after time we have hammered South Ayrshire Council for daft decisions and ineptitude.

Councillors and highly paid officials have to take their share of the blame.

We will not list their roll of shame here, regular readers are well aware of it.

Then like a lightning bolt from the blue, we now have the embryo of a plan in the hands of Council Leader Douglas Campbell to develop the Low Green.

Our simple message – make it happen Mr Campbell.

Above all else, we believe this can be the economic saviour of Ayr and give it a future as Scotland’s No. 1 holiday resort.

We are not talking about the entire space being developed, just along the Esplanade. That way we can retain a vast expanse for major events.

Nobody wants a Blackpool. But we will take Largs- on- steroids any day.

A trick was missed when the M77 opened, making it easy, quick and safe for Glaswegians to reach the coast.

Give them something to come for. We’d like to see something similar to Aberdeen’s offering – Codona’s vast indoor and outdoor amusements, complete with big wheel. There are also restaurants and cafe’s right on the front – and the place is MOBBED with families.

All 44.5 acres of Low Green were granted to the Burgh of Ayr by King William the Lion in 1205 for common grazing. Folk in the town no longer keep cattle and sheep.
