US airmen in hotel probe

-

the chairman of the house oversight committee, wrote to the then acting secretary of defence, Patrick Shanahan, to raise “serious conflict of interest concerns” about Trump making money from military trips to Scotland.

Details of the probe have been revealed by Politico, the US news outlet.

According to reports, Cummings said US military spending at Prestwick “increased substantially” since Trump took office in January 2017.

Pentagon officials have been asked to explain why $ 11m (£ 9m) has been spent on fuel at the airport in the past two years.

It is claimed cheaper purchases could have been made at a US military base.

Yet official US records are said to show 629 fuel purchase orders at Prestwick since October 2017.

The committee also wants to see all financial documents from the US Department of Defence relating to Trump Turnberry.

Cummings’s letter states: “Two years before the 2016 election, President Trump spent hundreds of millions of dollars to purchase and renovate the Turnberry golf course in Scotland.

“To date, the property has continued to suffer financial losses and has not turned a profit for the president of his companies.

“The airport closest to the Trump Turnberry golf course — Glasgow Prestwick Airport — has been viewed as integral to the golf course’s financial success, yet it too has lost millions of dollars every year since its purchase by the Scottish government in 2013.”

The committee says it has yet to receive any explanation for this irregular “military sleepover” from the Pentagon.

Ross Greer, a Scottish Green MSP, claims the allegations are “bad news” for Trump and the SNP.

He said: “The Scottish government have a duty to responsibly steward our public assets.

“Allowing Donald Trump and the American military to use Prestwick in this way is anything but.

“I expect Sc o t t i s h ministers to assist in full with any investigations.”
