Parking charge plan may vanish

-

Alliance look again at imposing the cost.

A group of people reinforced the message at the Troon Together conference.

Mr Milligan said: “The people of Arran have just managed to get North Ayrshire Council to abandon parking charges in Brodick and we can do it too.”

Charges are planned for parking at the Italian Gardens, Ivy Cottage and South Beach.

Mr Milligan added: “It needs knocked back and will have a huge impact.

“I would like to know how much it will cost to install the ticket machines, the wardens to police it and the administration.

“It is not just that. There are other repercussions.

“People will move on to the streets, creating great problems in South Beach and Bentinck Drive, which may have to go down to a one- way system as people park on verges and near driveways.

“It will cause utter chaos and we have made the police aware of it.”

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance wants to charge 50p an hour or £ 5 a day, including in some car parks in Prestwick and Ayr.

But all has recently gone quiet on the plan and the Alliance have sent the proposals back to South Ayrshire Council.

A senior source said: “This has become too much of a political hot potato and the bets are that South Ayrshire will call a halt to it.

“The ticket machines cost an absolute fortune and paying for parking is not the money- spinner the council hoped it would be.”

Troon Together is led by a steering group including representatives from Troon Community Council, Troon Development Trust, Troon Rotary Club, Troon Business Club, Troon Churches Together, Troon Community Sports Hub, Muirhead Tenants and Residents Association, South Ayrshire Paths Initiative, and Troon and Villages Locality Group.

Council leader Douglas Campbell said: “We want all our towns and villages to be the best they can, providing attractive and welcoming places to live, work and visit and making the most of our people and places.

“The aim is to bring everyone’s views together to create a vision and masterplan that not only sets out exactly what the people of Troon want for their town but also provides the roadmap for how we make that happen.”

A South Ayrshire Council spokesman said: “Ayrshire Roads Alliance will carry out a further review of car parking charges and return in the autumn with proposals as part of a parking strategy.”
