What a steel for metal lessons

-

Kids at Carrick Academy in Maybole are marching to the beat of their own drums.

That’s because a successful bid for funding has allowed the Music Department to set up a brand new Steel Band class.

During the summer they purchased the new equipment and teachers reckon the first rehearsal has already produced some talented performers.

Jo- Ann Spreadbury, Principal Teacher, said: “The group will run on a Tuesday lunchtime in the Music department and we would be delighted to see more new faces, we have plenty of instruments.

“All year groups and levels of performing ability welcome and we’re delighted to see some of our new S1 pupils joining in too.”

Meanwhile a Career Mentoring programme is underway with S6 pupils set for monthly meetings with their designated mentors in the community.

Jonathan Rusk, Depute Head Teacher, said: “A big thank you to our mentors for giving up their time .

“They share their experiences and knowledge from the workplace and help prepare our pupils for life after school.”
