Hattie proves she’s a winner

-

Every girl likes to look her best for a special occasion. And five- year- old Hattie Young was certainly looking the part as she proudly led the Marr Rugby team on to the pitch for their first home match in the Tennents Premiership against Musselburgh.

The Marr team had a guard of honour from the club’s mini section and Hattie, who plays in the Marr Mini P1 age group, became the first mascot that the club have had.

She must have been a lucky charm as Marr beat Musselburgh 43- 16 to sit joint top of the Premiership. PIC: KEN FERGUSON

Marr Rugby’s 1st XV grabbed a bonus point win, achieved in a very stop- start game that was fractured with frequent interruptions, including more than 30 penalties.

Despite going behind to an opening penalty, Marr got off to a promising start with some exciting phases of open play between forwards and backs.

Mackenzie Pearce opened Marr’s account and on the quarter hour mark Conor Bickerstaff added try number two.

Marr found themselves repeatedly pinged for being offside and following one of these Musselburgh’s Paul Cunningham added a second penalty.

The second quarter was equally fractured but the half ended with a third Marr try, scored by Richard Dalgleish and an opening try for Musselburgh.

In the second half Marr added three further tries with Jack Preston, Gregor Paxton and in the closing play Iosefo Turaga crossing the line. In reply Musselburgh scored twice.

Musselburgh never gave up but in the end it was a comfortable win for Marr, but with more to come.

• For the second week in a row Marr Rugby’s 2nd XV struck the west end of Glasgow.

This time it was Hillhead/ Jordnahill left to pick up the pieces as Marr ran out 62- 5 winners.

Along with GHA and Hamilton they are blasting their way through the opposition in the opening rounds.

Marr’s big test comes this Saturday when they travel with the 1s to play joint league leaders GHA. • The 3s ran out 29- 5 winners in a friendly against Lanark with almost 50 players getting a run- out. Tries came from Thomas Watkins ( 2), Euan McGerty ( 2) and Adam McPherson. Fixtures – Saturday: 1s – Away v GHA;

2s – Away v GHA; 3s – Home v Clydesdale 2nd XV
