Thought for the week..

- Compiled by Irene Howat

Some time ago I was telling the Bible story of Daniel to my Sunday School class. We had just reached the point where a hand appeared and wrote the words ‘ Mene, mene, tekel, parsin’ on the wall of King Belshazzar’s banqueting hall.

God gave Daniel the gift of interpretation, and he was able to tell the king that the words meant that his days were numbered, he’d been weighed in the balance of God’s justice and found wanting, and that his kingdom was about to be divided.

Just then one of my Sunday School pupils asked if these words were the inspiration for ‘ Eney, meney, miney mo, catch a tiger by the toe.’ I looked it up, but the nursery rhyme only goes back a couple of hundred years. I was impressed. The boy who asked the question was relating real life, as he knew it, to the Bible. So often we forget to do that.
