Stewart: Great time to be an Ayr United supporter

- STUART WILSON

Sandy Stewart wants Ayr fans to turn out in force for their record- breaking team.

Saturday’s 3- 0 victory at Arbroath was the first time United had won five league games on the bounce in Scotland’s second tier since 1978.

And caretaker boss Stewart insists supporters should be rolling up to enjoy the best of times at Somerset Park.

He said: “Fans have to be enjoying what they’re seeing right now and the boys deserve all the support they can get.

“Once again on Saturday, some of our football was a joy to watch. We’re a team playing in an attractive way and I imagine it’s a great time to be a supporter.

“Getting as many along to Somerset would be fantastic and a good reward for the boys.”

More than 2000 home fans turned out for the beating of Dundee United.

And since then, Ayr have smashed seven goals on the road in romps at Alloa and Arbroath.

So hopes will be high for another strong turnout at the gates for Saturday’s visit of Inverness.

Stewart, who hardened this week as bookies’ favourite to land the Somerset hotseat, said: “All the credit must go to the players for how they’ve handled the last week.

“I couldn’t have asked for more from the lads and their approach has been brilliant.

“We’ll need the same against Inverness, who will pose very different kinds of problems, and we’ll work hard on that this week.”

Ayr’s mounting injury problems show little sign of healing, meanwhile, with Mark Kerr set to miss Saturday’s game after tweaking his thigh at Gayfield.

Craig McGuffie, Frank Ross and Steven Bell also won’t be seen until after the international break. • Ayr’s reserves beat BSC Glasgow 5- 1 at Alloa on Monday night. Mark McKenzie hit a hat trick with Craig Moore bagging a double.
