Ayr suffer agony of last gasp loss

League leaders Melrose grab injury time winner

- CALLUM KERR

Ayr Club XV were on the wrong side of an injurytime winner, falling cruelly to league leaders Melrose.

A war of attrition, Ayr can walk away with heads held high, with plenty positives to take from the 20- 15 loss.

It was the personification of a battle – with both sides throwing caution to the wind in hopes of edging their opposition.

Melrose, who played mostly through their big pack, used their muscle to keep their unbeaten streak alive and thwart the visitors’ attack.

Despite cutting a dejected figure at full time, head coach Stuart Fenwick believes there are plenty positives to take from the game:

“The disappointing thing is the result, not the performance,” he said.

“We got an awful lot more from the boys today in terms of attitude and intensity.

“We proved that we are a very difficult team to score against.”

Fenwick believes that it is crucial his men carry the positives into this week’s fixture:

“We welcome Stirling to Millbrae and it’ll be interesting to see how we perform with the Millbrae crowd behind us.

“There was a lot of times we were under the cosh and held them out, so it is pleasing we put ourselves in a position to win.

“This group grow with every game and I believe they still have their best rugby ahead of them.

“We will train hard this week and look to get back to winning ways”.

Ayr Ladies suffered a similar fate on Sunday, falling 56- 10 to defending champions Hillhead Jordanhill.

It was a spirited effort that in no- way mimicked the 1030 drubbing they received from the same opposition last month.

The abrasive Neve Finlay led the charge for Ayr, bagging all ten of their points.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Millbrae outfit this weekend, with the U18s beating Perthshire 79- 7.

It marks their seventh win on the bounce, with the development side yet to lose a game this season.
