A whale of a time
The next meeting of the RSGS Travellers’ Club will be a double header on two contrasting Asian countries.
Firstly, Sylvia Home will describe her visit to Japan as part of the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra’s 2019 summer tour. This promises to be an entertaining talk about a very successful tour, with the group having a busy schedule visiting cities and natural attractions all over the country, putting on a whole series of concerts.
The second speaker is local Secretary of RSGS, John Blease from Prestwick. He will be talking about his visit earlier this year to the sparsely populated country of Uzbekistan, formerly part of the Soviet Union. Some ancient cities such as Bukhara, Samarkand and the capital Tashkent have some spectacular, colourful architecture and date back for hundreds of years to when many important trade routes came through the area.
John is a humorous, experienced speaker and this should be an excellent follow- up to our first talk. Between the talks there will be a break for teas, coffees. This meeting will be in the Council Chambers, Ayr Town Hall, at 7.30pm on Wednesday November 6. Members of RSGS and OIR pay £ 2.50, non- members pay £ 4, under 18s and students are free.
The next main talk in the “Inspiring People” Series should be a crowd puller for anyone who likes
wildlife films, especially ones presented by David Attenborough. One of his regular cameramen is
Dunfermline man Doug Allan, who is willing to get into the freezing waters of the Polar lands to get footage of some of the biggest creatures on the planet. Doug will be explaining what his work involves with some thrilling close up photos and video clips from series such as Blue Planet and other BBC series involving David Attenborough. His talk is entitled “Whale Meet Again....” and it should be a fascinating evening. This talk will be on Wednesday November 27 in Ayr Town Hall, starting at 7.30, free to members of RSGS, students and under 18s. Non- members pay £ 10, either at the door, or by booking through www. rsgs. org
