Anger as artwork wiped out of popular mural

- STUART WILSON

A stunning town centre mural has been wiped from its canvas — sparking fury among the public.

The 25ft high design has drawn admiring glances since being painted on the gable end of Ayr’s Lorne Arcade in September.

Former Marr College pupil, Scott Mcanally, was even nominated for a top council award for his inspirational work.

But the same council bosses then ordered its removal in a row over the design breaching a conservation zone.

The Arcade’s landlord, who initially lodged an appeal, has now decided against the fight and admitted defeat.

But the sad demise of the artwork has drawn an angry response from those who loved its presence.

Commenting on our Facebook page, Melissa Rarity said: “This is shocking!

“It was amazing art and actually gave something decent to an abysmal area of the town.

“I would say I’m surprised but nothing surprises me with South Ayrshire Council anymore.

“They seem intent in ruining our town.”

Andrew Hazell added: “A symptom of what is wrong with Ayr and why it is dying a death, those in charge wanting to try and make it like the old Ayr like they remember.”

Richard Speirs said: “Does anyone actually work for the council in the realm of PR?

“Poor decision after poor decision, money wasted left right and centre.

“Popular events cancelled and others put into question, and then they pull a stunt like this. It’s almost comical.”

And Sandra Gray Mcque added: “My three- year- old granddaughter loves to go see this.

“Even took her granpa a few weeks back. Leave it alone.”

Talented artist Scott was named runner up at the 2019 South Ayrshire Youth Forum Awards in the Art and Design category.

And speaking at the unveiling of his mural, which featured a giant gorilla as its centrepiece, he said: “I think Ayrshire has been left behind.

“You look at places like London and Glasgow and they’re full of this stuff.”

A council spokesman said:“Planning permission is required as the mural is in a conservation area.

“However an appeal has been received, so no action will be taken by the council until that appeal has been heard.”
