Jazz train stops in village

A top jazz trio will play an up close and personal gig on St Valentine’s Day, this Friday.

The night is a tribute to Oscar Petersen and they are playing the renowned Night Train album – an all time jazz classic.

It is all taking place at Dalrymple Church Hall, 7pm to 9pm and is part of the Doonfest seasonal events.

Doonfest’s Jennifer Hogg said: “It is set to be a classic jazz night and not to be missed.”

Pete Johnstone is on Piano – David Bowden on Bass and Stephen Henderson on drums.

Pianist Peter Johnstone is a native of Glasgow whose prodigious talents have already brought him prominence in UK jazz circles.

An intelligen­t and virtuosic improviser, Peter is in demand in the Scottish scene.

He is known for playing with his own trio featuring bassist Brodie Jarvie and drummer John Lowrie, The Peter Johnstone Organ Quartet, collaborat­ive quartet “Square One”, Ben McDonald’s “Animus Quartet”, The Brodie Jarvie Septet, The Paul Towndrow Organ Trio and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.

David Bowden is an awardwinni­ng bass player and composer based in Glasgow, working primarily in the fields of jazz, folk and contempora­ry improvised music.

A mainstay of the Scottish scene, David has toured the UK and Europe extensivel­y and was described by BBC Radio 3 as “a gifted bass player.”

Since Graduating from the Royal Conservato­ire of Scotland in 2015 with first class honours, Stephen Henderson has been playing and touring in festivals across the UK and Europe.

He plays in several award winning bands in the current Scottish music scene including; Square One, Mezcla, the Fergus McCreadie Trio, Spark Trio and folk/ rock band Dosca.

Stephen also composes his own music which as been performed and recorded by these bands, his compositio­ns can be heard on Square One’s previous and upcoming album and also on Dosca’s debut album ‘ Meridian.’
