Teed off by public’s disrespect of courses

-

A warning has had to be issued after non- golfers have taken over courses as playgrounds.

People have been seen walking at will over pristine greens and astonishingly some are riding bikes over them.

Others have brought spades to turn bunkers into sand pits for their kids.

Golf South Ayrshire has been forced to issue a plea to people going onto the eight council courses during lockdown.

While no golf is being played, greenkeepers are still out keeping the courses in pristine order for a re- start.

Patrols are also being operated at Ayr’s three courses Belleisle, Seafield and Dalmilling; Troon’s trio Lochgreen, Darley and Fullarton; Maybole and Girvan.

One concerned golfer said: “Before lockdown the people that used the courses to walk dogs always respected where they were.

“It is clear some of the people who are now on them have never been there before and have no idea about the sanctity of the greens and tees.

“I saw a mother and her child go straight across a green in mountain bikes, it was terrible.”

Golf South Ayrshire say: “Respect our golf courses by keeping off all of the greens and tees, and staying out of the bunkers.

“Refrain from picnics, exercising horses, playing any form of sport including golf or gathering with people out with your household.”

Staff have authority to approach anybody breaking the rules.

The golf group said: “We have members of staff out and about on duty on the golf courses.

“If you are unable to do this ( comply with the request) then we will have to ask you to leave the course.

“We may have to report anyone who does not observe lockdown guidance.”
