Guiding you through the safe reopening of recycling centres
Household waste and recycling centres in East Ayrshire will reopen on Monday, June 1 by appointment only — and will be able to accept a limited range of waste and recycling.
Due to changes in government guidelines, the council can now open the centres at Western Road, Kilmarnock and Garlaff, Skares to cars only for the moment.
The reopening will be done on a phased basis and the council asks that residents only visit if they really need to.
To help the process run as safely and smoothly as possible, certain measures have been put in place including residents needing a residents’ recycling permit and a booking slot before they can access the centres.
This can be done now at www. eastayrshi. re/ permits or residents can call ( 01563) 554400 if no internet access.
Other measures include:
Residents will initially be able to bring general waste ( black bagged waste which would normally be deposited in your waste bin), garden waste, wood, cardboard and scrap metals;
Recycling centres will be open seven days a week.
Opening hours – Western Road: Mon and Thur 8am to 6.50pm; Tue/ Wed/ Fri/ Sat/ Sun 8am to 3.50pm.
Garlaff: Mon to Fri 8am to 4.30pm; Sat and Sun 8am to 4pm;
Only cars will be allowed to enter until further notice – no trailers or vans allowed;
One person per vehicle – or maximum of two from the same household only if there are heavy items to be lifted, or you are a blue badge holder.
Unfortunately, council employees will be unable to help with lifting items due to social distancing guidance;
Residents must observe social distancing of two metres from other residents and from council employees;
Residents should wait in their car until advised that it’s their turn;
Although not compulsory, residents may wish to consider wearing a mask and gloves;
Hand washing should be done before and after visiting the centre;
No pedestrian access. Councillor Elena Whitham, cabinet member for housing and communities, said: “We are pleased to be able to open our recycling centres again and I know that many of our residents will be very happy about this too.
“As this is a phased reopening, we can initially only accept certain waste and recycling, and we would ask that you only travel to the recycling centres if you absolutely have to and can’t store your waste safely at home.
“We will, however, continue to review types of waste and recycling that can be disposed of following government guidelines over the coming weeks.
“We’re expecting a lot of cars, especially when the centres first open, and that’s why we’ve put the permits and the booking system in place so that we can make it as quick and easy as possible for residents to gain access to the centres.
“Having the permit means you will no longer have to show ID with your name and address on it when you arrive, and instead your vehicle registration details will be checked on arrival.
“We thank all residents for their patience and understanding during what will no doubt be a very busy time at the recycling centres.
“If we all work together, we can make the reopening process as simple, fast and successful as possible.”
