25 YEARS AGO

Three labour district councillor­s have been dumped by their constituen­ts.

Les Little, Alicia Grant and Brenda Campbell have been de- selected in the run- up to the elections for the new South Ayrshire Council.

All three are long serving members of the existing Kyle and Carrick District Council. Also leaving is ex- provost Dan MacNeill. He is recovering from serious illness and his Maybole seat will be contested by Andy Hill.

50 YEARS AGO

The car wash premises at 1 Midton Road were quoted to Ayr Planning Committee on Monday as another example of the “clutter” of advertisin­g signs which deface too many business places in Ayr.

Before the committee was an applicatio­n for planning permission to erect eleven signs associated with car wash activities and an associated business.

Convenor William Pollok- Morris said it was a “clutter” and recommende­d only the sign already approved be authorised. The premises used to be a dairy.

100 YEARS AGO

Messrs Robert Dewar & Son’s Mart, Ayr. There were 166 fat cattle, 35 dairy and store cattle, 19 pigs, 486 sheep, 62 calves and 316 poultry.

Best dairy cows to £ 47, queys to £ 37 15s; feeding cows highest price of season at £ 34. Young pigs 51s, cross hogs 42s to 55s, blackfaces 26s 6d to 33s, Leicesters 45s to 102s, Yorkshires 32s to 88s.

Hens from 4s to 8s 3d, ducks 4s 6d to 7s 9d, chickens 4s to 7s 9d.

Fat cattle were the primest lot for many weeks, a very large number being supergrade­d, but fat sheep continue to be scarce.
