Fire crews race to tackle garage blaze
A blaze which ripped through a garden garage sparked a major emergency response.
The inferno ripped through the back yard of the home in Ayr’s Westwood Avenue on Friday afternoon.
Three fire engines raced to the scene as thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the air for miles around.
Stunned golfers playing at nearby Dalmilling stopped in their tracks as the smoke drifted across the course shortly before 5pm. Neighbours reported hearing “a few pops” from within the garage shortly before the blaze took hold.
A major emergency response tackled a fierce blaze on Friday after a garage caught fire.
Flames tore through a garage in Westwood Avenue, Ayr, with thick black smoke seen for miles around.
The inferno quickly engulfed the surrounding garden area and began spreading to the nearby property.
Three fire engines raced to the scene and quickly got the blaze, which broke out just before 5pm, under control.
Part of the street was closed to traffic during the incident.
Golfers enjoying their first social distanced tee- off on nearby Dalmilling Golf Course downed their clubs as the smoke filled the sky.
And there were reports of people witnessing the smoulder from Troon.
Witnesses reassured others that nobody was hurt in the blaze and reported the fire was the result of an elderly neighbour’s garage catching alight.
In an online post, Keiran Hamilton said: “It’s an old man’s workshop in the garage.”
Shirley Reid replied: “I heard a few pops.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 4.44pm to reports of a fire involving an external garage building at a property on Westwood Avenue, Ayr.
“Three appliances were mobilised to the scene, where crews extinguished the fire.
“There are no reported casualties.”
