First impressions of new riverfront plans

- SARAH HILLEY

This is how Ayr’s riverfront will look when high rise flats are demolished.

Designs have been released to show potential images of homes, which will replace the three tower blocks at Riverside Place.

There will be 90 one and two bedroom council flats available for older people.

Images published as part of a South Ayrshire Council consultation show the two buildings will be five storeys high.

The council said it wants to “create a modern housing development that is a nice place for people to live” and “homes that work well for the people who live in them.”

It also said it aims to “improve an already thriving community.”

A planning application is due to be submitted at a later date for the development to take the place of the current high rises.

They were built in 1969 with each of the blocks containing 78 one-bedroom flats.

Nearly half of residents living in them did not want to flit.

There has been opposition over the knocking down of the flats from some tenants themselves.

Fort Seafield and Wallacetown Community Council are also against the bid.

LMA Architects have come up with the designs for the new homes. People are invited to give feedback by August 28.

A consultation document said: “The site layout maximises open space and creates unenclosed shared areas” and “buffer gardens to the river walkway.”

Plans show current access to the existing car park would be unaltered.

The consultation document added: “Pathways through the site will allow permeability to the river.”

It went on: “The proposed massing looks to offer a more consistent scale, frontage and roofscape in line with the established pattern and character of the riverfront and Ayr.”

To give feedback email studio@l-m-a.co.uk, post a comment to LMA Architects, The Atrium, 6 New Road, Ayr, KA8 8EX or comment online on the South Ayrshire Council website.
