Souvenir hunters keep swiping signs that explain the optical illusion at Ayrshire’s world famous Electric Brae.

A shocked Councillor John Davidson told the Post:“I could hardly believe my eyes when I drove past and saw another sign had been stolen.

“That’s the third interpreti­ve sign that’s gone missing, and they cost £500 a time.”

Planning Officer James Yee said: “Luckily we have a spare sign as one of the missing ones was retrieved at Auchincrui­ve.”

50 YEARS AGO

A major feature of the eight-mile long Kilmarnock bypass will begin to take shape. The Bellfield Interchang­e is complex looking but easy to navigate.

A model shows the carriagewa­y from Spittal Hill to Fenwick, passing the Bellfield scheme and a bridge over the River Irvine.

The high-level roundabout stems the roads to Riccarton, Queens Drive and Hurlford. The bypass is the biggest ever single road developmen­t in Ayrshire , costing £5m with 21 bridges and will take two years to build.

100 YEARS AGO

The Opening of a Scrap Iron Yard in Ayr.

Mr E T Nafialin, 123 Main Street, begs to intimate to his numerous customers and to the Public in general, that he has removed from the above premises to more commodious premises.
