Butcher: Fence is killing my trade
A blazing mad butcher has revealed trade has plunged to rock bottom . . . after the business has been fenced in for three months.
It comes as no surprise to the much- loved Pollok Williamson butchery that it’s lack of South Ayrshire Council action to blame.
The council fenced off the pavement and part of the road at the bottom of Ayr High Street in May.
The cordon also knocked out the bus stop, which gained Pollok Williamson a lot of customers.
Butcher Clark McCrindle said his patience has now run out and blasted: “Apparently they cannot decide what to do about the roof.
“As if things are not bad enough at the moment.
“This fire was in May . . . who in the real world needs this long?
“This fence is the bane of our lives.” The 2am fire was in an attic flat above the adjacent building.
It wiped out the World of Art business which had traded for 42 years.
And rain has now been pouring in for three months as there is no roof.
South Ayrshire Council owns most of the properties which stretch back from the Town Hall.
Clark says people think they are shut because of the extent of the fence.
He revealed: “The fence is now serving no purpose as the building is safe.
“They won’t even move it back off the road.
“Bus drivers including the Craig Tara service have been told they cannot stop here.
“It’s pathetic, we are the last stop going out of town and is our lifeline. “I have worked here for over 30 years and this is the worst we have ever had.”
South Ayrshire Council admitted safety works still have to take place.
A spokesman said :“The fencing is in place to ensure public safety, and we have worked with the businesses to make sure access is maintained.
“It has taken time to obtain the necessary consents, but now these are in place, safety works are set to start in the next few weeks.
“Once these works are carried out, the fencing can be removed until the reinstatement begins.”
