Barns- storming of a street in Ayr
Eight bedrooms over three floors
It feels rather fitting - after seven years - to be writing my final Ayrshire Property page about Barns Street, the Georgian heart of Ayr.
Many moons - and tens of thousands of stories - ago I began my journalistic career in the Barns Street office of a long defunct paper, the Ayr Free Press.
Of course I didn’t know it then, but Barns Street was the first planned terrace in Ayr. It was built on the spot of old granaries - hence the name Barns - from the local estate.
Two hundred and twenty years later it is still admired.
This one needs some money spent whether it is to be used for the original purpose as a family home, a multiroom letting enterprise or as offices.
A similar property on a favoured street in Edinburgh New Town would command up to £ 1.5m.
You can get this eight- bedroomed, three- storey townhouse for offers over £ 250,000.
Agent Donald Ross Residential admits : “Although requiring a degree of modernisation throughout, it is our opinion this particular property would suit a wide range of potential purchasers.”
The pillared doorway is just a couple of feet from the pavement, but it is out the back where the big piece of land is.
This is also where you get the sun and plenty of parking as well as a double garage, accessed from a pretty lane. Given Barns Street is permit or pop money in a ticket machine territory for parking, this is a boost.
There are also outbuildings at the rear, presumably the old washhouses and stores of the family’s servants, as well as a sunroom ideal for garden entertaining.
The inside needs re- jigging, primarily the ground floor as there is a bedroom and office that should be reception rooms.
But there is a great chance to bring back the glory of the entrance hall and its original staircase.
The middle floor has four bedrooms, three en- suite and another shower room. The top has three more bedrooms.
• I’m off to our sister paper the Paisley Daily Express as Head of News. Thanks for reading.
I wonder if there’s a property page in Paisley . . . .?
