Team gel but manager seeks more new players

- STUART WILSON

Mark Kerr reckons Ayr’s unusual pre season is helping his players bond quicker than normal.

Covid restrictions mean United are having to train on the move, without the use of a dressing room.

But the boss insists the strange set- up has not hampered his early work.

He said: “It’s a challenge because you’re trying to recreate the dressing room atmosphere out on a pitch.

“At the moment the players are straight in and out from training in their gear and it’s not what we’re used to.

“The little things like boys having their own places where they sit each day is something you take for granted.

“But we’re not letting it affect us and the atmosphere has been brilliant.

“The new boys are fitting in really well and thankfully we’ve had a great first week with no issues.”

The boss hopes to use the international break to make his next move in the transfer market.

A deal for a new number one is edging closer and Kerr is keen to use his network of contacts down south to bolster the squad moving forward.

He said: “You saw last year that clubs down there want us to work with their players.

“It looks like being the same this time so we’ll see what comes of that.

“The English clubs are a bit ahead of us in terms of their season, sorting out squads and who might be available.

“We’re certainly working away on things and hopefully we’ll get one or two over the line shortly.”

Youngsters Gabe Skeoch and Finn Ecrepont ( below) have joined former United boss Brian Reid on seasonlong loans at Albion Rovers.

Kerr said: “It’s a great opportunity to go out and get 30- odd games at a senior club.

“Finn has been in and around our setup for a while now while spending a lot of time on the bench, so he needs this for his progression.

“Hopefully it will do them both the world of good.”

Meanwhile, the club is hoping for a big push on season ticket sales with less than 400 sold so far.

United’s usual take up is around 1000 briefs and bosses know numbers are more vital than ever this year.

Commercial boss Graeme Miller said: “The support of the fans has never been more critical than it is now.

“The focus of Scottish football is about getting crowds back inside grounds and, with test events scheduled for the Premiership this month, we hope this will spell positive news for all.

“Having the backing of our great fans inside Somerset Park is, of course, the ultimate hope.

“But by buying season tickets now, supporters can also help ensure the final pieces of Mark Kerr’s jigsaw are put together as he builds his squad for the new season.”

Tickets are on sale from the club shop or online at www. ayrunitedfc. co. uk
