Group’s help to tackle litter issue

- SARAH HILLEY

Ayr volunteers who have been ridding the town of rubbish will be armed with free litter picking equipment for people to borrow.

Charity Keep Scotland Beautiful is giving the kit to group Don’t Trash Ayr.

They are the first group in South Ayrshire to become a local litter picking hub.

Kits include litter pickers, gloves, bag hoops and hi visibility vests to allow people to take part in two household litter picks or do it alone.

Ayr West councillor Siobhian Brown said: “With the ease of lockdown and the warm weather earlier this year, unfortunately we saw the return of mindless littering.”

Barry Fisher, Chief Executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful said: “During lockdown, many of us spent time enjoying our local parks and green spaces. Lockdown showed us how important these areas are to our health and well- being. Unfortunately, a minority of people have behaved in an irresponsible and selfish manner, dropping their rubbish, leaving it for others to clean up and spoiling our beautiful country.”

Publicly funded organisation Zero Waste Scotland paid for the litter kits.

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland, said: “It is a shame these are needed, but the litter picking hubs will give communities the opportunity to tackle the nuisance of litter and ensure the areas they love can continue to look their best.”
