CAM THE MAN

-

Cammy Smith has pledged to prove a point for Ayr after sealing a loan switch to Somerset Park.

The 25- year- old striker has joined the Honest Men on a three month deal from Dundee United.

And both parties are hopeful a longer relationship could flourish.

It follows a frustrating spell on Tayside for the former Aberdeen and St Mirren star, who is now determined to make up for lost time.

Smith told the Post: “Things haven’t worked out at Dundee United for one reason or another and it’s been a frustrating 18 months.

“It’s been stop- start for me since leaving St Mirren and I’m just desperate to play regular football again and score goals.

“The manager here really impressed me with what he had to say and how he’s trying to move things forward with the club.

“I’m confident that if I get a run of games, I’ll be able to show him and everyone else my ability and reward his faith.”

Smith was St Mirren’s player of the year when the Buddies won the Championship in 2018 and won the same league again

last year as part of the Tangerines’ squad.

And encouragement from a familiar face helped nudge the Somerset deal over the line.

Smith revealed: “I know quite a few boys who are already here or have played here but I also spoke to Lawrence [ Shankland] and he couldn’t say enough good things about the club.

“Obviously he had a great time here and he said I’d be looked after and it would be just the move I needed.

“He was urging me to go for it.” Smith made an immediate impact on debut at Inverness on Saturday and was unlucky not to bag the winner with a stoppage time free kick.

Now he’s hoping to show fans what he can do with an extended run in the black and white.

He said: “My contact at Dundee United runs out at the end of January and my focus just now is on coming here and doing really well.

“There will be a discussion to have about what happens next nearer the time, but it’s something we’ll do in due course.

“Right now I just want to get in the team and when you look at it, there are a lot of good players here.

“We absolutely should be pushing for the play- offs and there’s a lot to look forward to with the quality of the squad.”

Delighted boss Mark Kerr told the Post: “It’s a great bit of business as Cammy is a proven player at this level.

“His quality on the ball is going to add so much for us in the final third and all he needs is that run of games to get back to his best.

“I also spoke to Lawrence and he said Cammy has been really sharp in training for Dundee United.

“We’ve held our nerve to do a deal and get him and I’m absolutely delighted.”
