Dumping at Riverside is a ‘ disgrace’

- RYAN THOM

Ayr riverside has been used as a dumping ground for rubbish with the careless fly tipping branded a ‘ disgrace’.

Black bin bags full of waste were seen sprawled across a grassy embankment near to Turner’s Brig in the town centre last week.

The Ayrshire Post was made aware of the mess by a concerned resident of Blackfriars Walk who was left disgusted by what they saw.

Ayr councillor Siobhian Brown ordered that the mess was cleared up – as she requested CCTV in place to deter future flytippers.

One resident told the Post: “It is an absolute disgrace to find rubbish dumped at the riverside. I couldn’t believe what I was saw - there were loads of bin bags full, bottles and take away boxes. It was just a complete mess.

“It is sad to see this happening in Ayr. People should be using their bins and not just throwing their rubbish anywhere they feel like it.”

The SNP politician, who helps run clean- up group Don’t Trash Ayr, was appalled by the mess as she instructed Waste Management to retrieve the rubbish before it was washed away.

She said: “This is absolutely shocking. How anybody can think of dumping this rubbish on our riverside is incomprehensible.

“I know the council are taking urgent action to retrieve this rubbish before it is washed out and hopefully, we will be able to identify the culprit who did this and take action.

“It is extremely sad that people behave in this manner with absolutely no civic pride or regard for our town.”

A specialist team from Waste Management were called out to remove the litter from the grassy embankment next to the river.

Councillor Brown is hoping that CCTV can be installed next to the spot to act as a deterrent.

She added: “We want to catch the culprits; this is a priority area for us now.

“We are going to have CCTV installed to monitor the situation and stop anyone ever doing this again.”

A council spokesperson said: “We are arranging to have the rubbish removed and we will be doing all we can to identify the people responsible so we can take action.”
