The Trump name is now officially toxic
Just when everyone involved with Trump Turnberry Hotel thought things couldn’t get any worse . . . they got worse!
They woke up on Monday morning to news that the USPGA – the governing body of American golf – had pulled their 2022 PGA Championship from the Trump National course in New Jersey.
Their statement about the venue being “detrimental” to their reputation didn’t mention the Capitol Building riots.
But it didn’t need to.
The fears I have expressed on this page many times – about The Open returning to Turnberry – have sadly been realised.
At the highest levels of the sport, the Trump name is now officially toxic. In many ways, it’s all a bit sad.
The Trump name has poured millions of dollars and pounds into the game.
Donald genuinely loves golf – all over the world and especially at Turnberry.
But we’ve now reached the point where Trump’s name does more harm than Trump’s money does good.
If the former President is now going to devote more time to his business empire then the Trump Turnberry file makes depressing reading.
2014 - a £ 3.6 million loss
2015 - a £ 8.4 million loss
2016 - a £ 17.6 million loss
2017 - a £ 3.38 million loss
2018 – a £ 10.7 million loss
2019 – a £ 2.3 million loss.
And I suggest Mr Trump is sitting comfortably when his accountant reveals the numbers for the Covid cursed hit year of 2020.
At the beginning of his presidential term, Donald Trump pledged to distance the Oval Office from his businesses. Unwittingly, he not only distanced them – he disadvantaged them.
His management team at the hotel are first class – even world class.
But even they would admit – albeit in whispers – that the combination of Trump’s moniker and Trump’s mouth hasn’t always been good for business.
Trump Turnberry Hotel for sale in 2021?
And if so – who would want to buy it? Well . . . it’s a fabulous building . . . in a stunning location . . and one of the most historic and scenic golf links in the world.
Who wouldn’t want to buy it?
