Tom Walsh reckons Ayr have no need to press the panic button – despite being plunged into a Championsh­ip scrap.

Defeat against Inverness saw United drop into the relegation play-off spot following a run of just one win in nine.

But Walsh insists the incredibly tight nature of the league means it’s a time for cool heads.

He said: “There’s still so much football to be played and the league is so tight so we just have to keep fighting in every game.

“A couple of wins can get you up the table very quickly and that’s got to be the aim – as it will be for every team.

“But we have to start making sure we get those wins soon.

“We have great players in our dressing room who can perform at this level.

“It’s a case of small margins that are costing us at the moment but I’ve no doubt we can get up the table soon.

“Inverness were more clinical than us and took their chances.

“So we know we have to start sticking the ball in the net.

“That’s the difference at the moment.” The battle to avoid relegation or make the top four is set to be one of the closest in the country during the run in.
